Carolyn's Fingers  performed by Cocteau Twins  1988

from Blue Bell Knoll, available on CD (4AD)

19 Apr 01 ·delicado: Superb track! I must start listing some Cocteau Twins; love the whole Blue Bell Knoll album.
Since I Left You  performed by The Avalanches  2001
Recommended by secularus [profile]

This Melbourne, Australia 6 piece manages to mix dance beats and easy listening/soul samples in a much more interesting and moving way than recent artists working with similar ingredients. This track is sample happy, sampling the likes of the Main Attractions "Everyday," Klaus WUnderlich's "Let's do the Latin Hustle," and "By the Time I Get to Phoenix." I immediately recognized the Hustle's melody, acting as a primer for the wonderful 60s soul vocals. This is no doubt a feel good song!

19 Apr 01 ·delicado: yeah, this is great, I agree! Nice - and unusual - for a song to mix disco and easy listening in quite the way this song does. The one complaint which could be levelled is that the song isn't all that musically varied. As you say though, a feelgood number...
19 Apr 01 ·geishalass: I bought this album last week and I'm in love with it! Stellar stuff, the Holiday sample is such a teaser though!
Torpedo  performed by Novi Singers  1969

Some incredible vocalese from Poland, of all places.

from Vocal Jazz From Poland 1965 to 1975, available on CD

19 Apr 01 ·delicado: yeah, great track! I highly recommend the Polski Nagrania CD of the albums 'Bossa Nova' and Torpedo' - incredible stuff...
05 Sep 02 ·Liv: Compost records (of Jazzanova fame) have also reissued an compilation album with the Novi singers' best tracks..well worth checking out in all their glory.. Especially the contrast between the male/female voices is fresh &innovative sounding..
Se telefonando  performed by Mina  1966
Recommended by delicado [profile]

A dramatic pop number from the 60s in which Mina passionately belts out the tune. The opening is gentle, with a delicate trumpet melody; it then builds up to a huge climax with full orchestra. The song is infuriatingly catchy and familiar; I'm sure I had heard it many times before I finally identified it about five years ago. Very highly recommended.

available on CD - Canto Morricone, Vol 1 (Bear Family)

19 Apr 01 ·andyjl: This song was covered in a great version by Francoise Hardy (as "Je changerais d'avis"). It's on several compilations of her 60s recordings.
19 Apr 01 ·delicado: Francoise also recorded it in English (the recording is exactly the same apart from the vocals) as 'I will change my life'. Great stuff!
me japanese boy  performed by Pizzicato Five  1996
Recommended by king8egg [profile]

pizzicato five have recorded several versions of this bacharach composition in both japanese and english. i like all of them but prefer this version from great white wonder. i believe it comes from a rehearsal. this version has a more traditional or lounge feel. almost as if you were in a club witnessing the rehearsal for yourself. because of this it also feels more intimate and carries a greater emotional impact than some of the other versions.

from great white wonder, available on CD

19 Apr 01 ·delicado: I enjoy this song very much as well, although I think I've only heard P5's more dancey versions. I would recommend an obscure version by 'The Young Generation', a group of English children recording in the early 70s.
10 May 01 ·tinks: the only version of this i know is the one on the "five by five" ep, which i believe is earlier? great song nonetheless.
11 May 01 ·delicado: I just found out that my 'Young Generation' LP containing this song is a notorious ebay rarity, selling for around $100. Damn - I gave the record away to a thrift store after taping the songs I liked...!
