Dream On Dreamer  performed by Brand New Heavies  1994
Composed by Davenport/Austin

The Brand New Heavies were one of the significant groups of the then popular "Acid Jazz" sound in the early 90s. "Dream On Dreamer" still strikes me with it's precisely executed funk rhythm and lush production: Tight rhythm section with funky drums, guitar and bass combined with jazzy piano chords, swirling strings and a crisp brass section. On top of that some flutes, fluegelhorn, percussion and organ with a very pleasant vocal performance by N'Dea Davenport.

The Past (7 Mix)  performed by Intastella  1996
Composed by Bergman, Hamisch/Birtwhistle/Engel/Grundy/Martin Mittler/Wright

This track sounds like the best Saint Etienne song you never heard. The voice of singer Stella sounds strikingly similar to Sarah Cracknell. The music itself is Etienne-esque as well with various samples (e.g. a sped up version of the beginning of Scott Walker's "Montague Terrace (In Blue)"), electronic harpsicord, muted trumpet/fluegelhorn and even some vague northumbrian pipes appearing in the background, all blending together very tastefully.

Round & Round  performed by New Order  1989
Composed by New Order

"Technique" is widely regarded as New Orders best album and i surely second that opinion: No fillers, all killers and the balance between "live" sounding songs and balearic, synthesized songs is just perfect. "Round & Round" falls in the latter category: Energetic, multi-layered, sequenced synth stuff going on, with some guitar by Sumner and, for me most importantly probably, Peter Hook's distinctive, emotional bass sound. I guess it's Hook's hooks i dig the most in the New Order soundscape, always delivering a consistency in their sound over many musical changes during the years. It's unmatched for me how that man evokes such emotions and melody out of a bass guitar.

1000 Times  performed by Tahiti 80  2002
Composed by Tahiti 80

A perfect piece of contemporary pop music: uplifting and sunshiny, yet with the right dose of melancholia. The production is excellent, as well as the instrumentation with a very driving rhythm section, warm electric piano, guitars and horns. What makes this really stand out is the terrific string arrangement by Richard Hewson (A protegee of George Martin and quite busy arranging during the 70s) which is very floating, sweeping and lush.

Enjoy The Silence  performed by Depeche Mode  1990
Composed by Martin L. Gore

To me, Depeche Mode was primarily a great singles band, with the exception of "Some great reward" (1984) and "Violator" (1990), which were consistently great albums. "Enjoy The Silence" shows Depeche Mode at the top of their game: Gore's songwriting talent, Gahan's vocal performance and Wilder's impeccable arrangement. The newly remixed "Enjoy The Silence 04" clearly shows why the original just can't be improved in any way.
