mo funky  performed by zoobombs  1999
Recommended by n-jeff [profile]

I think Zoobombs are a Japanese Heavy Metal band, but this is not metal, sort of groovy rock, maybe derived from the Stone Roses. Most of the words are in (presumably) Japanese but the chorus is English, and you can just imagine the meeting with an A&R man that gave rise to it. "You're a good band, y'know, you just need to get more funky". And he may have been right, this is mo funky, percussion, driving bass, great chorus, It gradually builds up and speeds up all the way through. Until it falls apart then the dub starts with guitars all over it. Classic.

from let it Bomb (Emporer Norton emn 7026), available on CD

03 Dec 01 ·penelope_66: I haven't heard anything from this album, but I love the song "Flat-Top" off their 'Welcome Back, Zoobombs!' album. I'd have to say there are some catchy tunes that pop up throughout the record, but overall it's rather mediocre and strikes a bit of ambivolence within my taste. One of those things you buy for a song or two.
12 Feb 02 ·n-jeff: Let it bomb is a bit of a mixed bag, too. I love mo funky and mo dub, but don't play much of the rest of it.
me japanese boy  performed by Pizzicato Five  1996
Recommended by king8egg [profile]

pizzicato five have recorded several versions of this bacharach composition in both japanese and english. i like all of them but prefer this version from great white wonder. i believe it comes from a rehearsal. this version has a more traditional or lounge feel. almost as if you were in a club witnessing the rehearsal for yourself. because of this it also feels more intimate and carries a greater emotional impact than some of the other versions.

from great white wonder (nippon columbia/triad COCA-13713), available on CD

19 Apr 01 ·delicado: I enjoy this song very much as well, although I think I've only heard P5's more dancey versions. I would recommend an obscure version by 'The Young Generation', a group of English children recording in the early 70s.
10 May 01 ·tinks: the only version of this i know is the one on the "five by five" ep, which i believe is earlier? great song nonetheless.
11 May 01 ·delicado: I just found out that my 'Young Generation' LP containing this song is a notorious ebay rarity, selling for around $100. Damn - I gave the record away to a thrift store after taping the songs I liked...!
Pizzicato Five X (remix by Pandart Sashoona)  performed by Pizzicato Five  2000
Recommended by opl3003 [profile]

This is an almost 12 minute remix of tons of different Pizzicato Five songs by the Tokyo DJ duo Pandart Sashoona. It's quite amazing and very danceable. If you're never heard Pizzicato Five, it can be a bit overwhelming, but it's a good start! Give it a listen, you won't be disappointed!

from Decemebr 24th (single) (******** records, tokyo COCA-50429)
available on CD - December 24th (******** records, tokyo)

The International Pizzicato Five Mansion  performed by Pizzicato Five  1998
Recommended by MMMp [profile]

This song would be better recognized as the instrumental version of "A New Song," available on the LP and cd, where a synthesizer has been added in place of vocals giving the song a whole new sound that is an entirely different type of sophistication.

from Playboy & Playgirl LP (Matador ole 333-1)

04 Mar 02 ·MMMp: this clip here is from the CD and is the guided tour of Pizzicato FIve "HQ," not the track I'm recommending. Still very cool, though!
04 Mar 02 ·MMMp: Well, this is the part of the track that uses the track I am recommending. Only on vinyl there is no voice over (but his voice is cool, isn't it?)
we were so much in love  performed by hideki kaji  1998
Recommended by daidai [profile]

from tea (trattoria PSCR-5556)
