Spirit Ditch  performed by Sparklehorse  1995
Composed by Mark Linkous

I really could've picked any song from this album, but this was the song that stood out the most when I first heard it.
A gentle, almost fragile, home recording. Hushed vocals, simple guitar lines, and minimal drums, its intimacy is compounded tenfold towards the end when he samples what could very well have been a message left on his answering machine.

from Vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot, available on CD (Capitol)

Piazza, New York Catcher  performed by Belle & Sebastian  2003
Composed by Belle & Sebastian

This is such a pretty song. With just an acoustic guitar and voice, it could've easily sounded like any other folk song, yet I find something incredibly endearing about it.
Lyrically, it's a love story interrupted with baseball imagery (very strange for a Scotsman to display an understanding of the sport).

from Dear Catastrophe Waitress, available on CD (Rough Trade)

Rocket Number Nine Take Off For The Planet Venus  performed by Sun Ra and His Arkestra  1960
Composed by Sun Ra

I've been listening to Sun Ra a lot lately and am mesmerized by this song. As far as I'm concerned, it's the perfect blend of jazz and avant-garde. Throw in a space theme (what else?) and you have a classic.

from Easy Listening for Intergalactic Travel, available on CD

For All We Know  performed by Nina Simone  1957
Composed by Coots/Lewis

I haven't heard any other versions of this song, although I can't imagine anyone else making it their own to extent Ms Simone does. With just a piano and her voice, it's such a beautiful yet majestic song.

from My Baby Just Cares For Me, available on CD

Youre So Great  performed by Blur  1997
Composed by Graham Coxon

Slacker indie rock with a great guitar sound. It also has one of my favorite guitar solos.

from Blur, available on CD
