maita  performed by Doris Monteiro  1976
Recommended by klatu [profile]

A very nice uptempo Brazilian number so much of the same cloth as Elis Regina's "zazueira" and "bicho de matto" that I was surprised that Jorge Ben didn't write it. The album as a whole is definitely one that grows on you with each listen, but this track will hit you the first time out.

from Agora (EMI/Odeon TOCP-66054), available on CD (EMI/Odeon Japan)

04 Feb 03 ·eftimihn: Wow, just wanted to recommend this one myself realizing i'm just a couple of days too late. Anyway, this is a great track indeed just like "Dia De Feira", also from "Agora"...

the perfect song for driving in your car on a hot summer's afternoon,

from 16 Lover's Lane, available on CD (Beggar's Banquet)

08 Mar 03 ·eftimihn: I can absolutely confirm that, since i played it various times on the occasion described above. Ivy recently did a very sweet version of the tune on their last album "Guestroom".
du hast mich  performed by howard carpendale  196?

german guy with a silly english name. i think there are tons of shit with his name on but this song rocks!

26 Jun 03 ·eftimihn: Well, the guy has been living in germany forever it seems, but he's actually from south-africa, which kind of explains his silly name, which is his real name. You're right with the rest you've been saying though :)
  27 Jun 03 ·shaka_klaus: oh. i didn't know that. cheerio.
03 Feb 04 ·Arthur: I love all this info! I picked up a pic sleeve 45 of Howards - a rather difficult version of "Stand By Me" -and the flip is called "Do Me A Favour" and Howard really goes to town on it!
Before We Begin  performed by Broadcast  2003

Peers and close friends of Stereolab, Birmingham's Broadcast are one of the most interesting alternative pop acts in the world. This song is an example of their extraordinary skills in crafting a haunting, beautiful melody to go with a sound that's like a son of the band The United States Of America and Ennio Morricone. These folks took four years building their own studio. Can't blame them a bit as the results are simply stunning.

from Ha Ha Sound, available on CD (Warp)

18 Aug 03 ·eftimihn: Oh yes, this track is gem, no doubt about that. To me the melody and harmonies incorporated are quite reminiscent of late 60s sunshine pop/soft rock stuff of that era.
18 Aug 03 ·tempted: You're correct there. They must be fans of people like Curt Boettcher and Margo Guryan, too!
08 Oct 03 ·tinks: i love this band. they are so very excellent to see live, as well. and they'll be here in about a month! woohoo!
suspiria  performed by I Goblin  1976

I don't care much for the rest of the soundtrack, but the title theme for this dario Argento horror film is top rate. Underpinnig the whole thing is a continuous ominous rhythm played on what sounds like a hammered dulcimer, on top of this there doesn't appear to be much actually going on. Apart from the sound effects. Screams, bells. All very, very intense. I have a vinyl version of teh OST (plus a 7 of the theme from Il Giaguaro magazine [quick brag]), but the cd looks good with a couple of extra versions.

from Suspiria (Dagored)
available on CD - suspiria

29 Oct 03 ·eftimihn: Oh yeah, this is one of the creepiest tracks ever recorded with it's hypnotically repetitive style building up slowly in the first half and then turning into a faster paced prog-rockish second half with a kind of gothic sounding, massive organ and furious synths.
30 Oct 03 ·n-jeff: I also forgot the chanting. And theres some kind of bassy dijeridoo thing going on in there too.
