Before the (deserved) hype and the sell out concerts, this tune- a B Side on one of their earlier EPs- was the first Franz tune I'd ever heard.
The raw, slightly out of tune vocals, the wonky synth/organ riffs, the lyrics about Archduke Ferdinand's assassination by Gavrillo Princip, as sung to his wife Sophia? How can anyone resist?
It's a shame they don't play this live at their shows!
a cover of The Fire Engines's song (the Engines then reciprocated with a cover of "Jacqueline"). knocks the socks off the original version, but i'm biased after all -- it's just incredibly sexy and groovy, and there's Alex K and Nick McC -- can't go wrong there.
This song is so sinister sounding, and so dark, but at the same time you can dance to it. It's uptempo, but somehow still vaguely depressing. Plus, "It's better in the matinee, the dark of the matinee" is just such a cool lyric.
